Former German NFL star Sebastian Vollmer announced a big comeback on Wednesday at the OMR in Hamburg.

As the former offensive tackle of the New England Patriots announced on the big stage in Hamburg, where he gave a talk with his former teammate, quarterback legend Tom Brady, he will be seen more often on German television on RTL in the future.

Last season he was already regularly live on site in the NFL stadiums as a sideline reporter, alternating with Markus Kuhn for RTL NFL, but in the coming season, which will of course also be shown live on RTL and in the stream on RTL+, Vollmer will also appear as a co-commentator again.

How many games he will accompany for the Cologne broadcaster and which ones – as well as which play-by-play commentator at his side – was still left open at RTL. More information will be available in due course.

First German Super Bowl winner

Vollmer was a second-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2009 NFL Draft and is still the German player who was drafted second highest (58th pick) in the draft. So far he has only been surpassed by his RTL-NFL colleague Björn Werner, who was taken 26th by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2013 draft in round 1.

From a German perspective, however, no one has surpassed Vollmer in terms of his successes. Vollmer impressed as a rookie and secured a starting position during his first season, which he didn’t give up until the end of his career after the season. With the Patriots, where he primarily played right tackle, he always reached the playoffs and won at least the AFC East in each of his seasons.

He was active in the Super Bowl twice after the 2011 and 2014 seasons and won Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks (28:24), making him the first German-born Super Bowl winner. He was also part of the team that won Super Bowl XLI (34:28 OT) against the Atlanta Falcons, but did not play in the 2016 season due to a serious hip injury. That injury also ended his career at the age of 32.

He then started his second career as a TV expert, initially at ran and DAZN and since 2023 at RTL.
