Next title chance for Lionel Messi: Inter Miami moves into the final of the US Open Cup

Penalty shootout decision

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami have reached the next final. Four days after winning the Leagues Cup, Miami won their US Open Cup semifinals against FC Cincinnati 5-4 on penalties on Wednesday (local time). In the regular season of the competition, which is comparable to the DFB Cup, the guests from Florida had caught up from a 0:2 deficit.

Leonardo Campana scored the equalizer in the seventh minute of injury time from a Messi cross. Campana had already scored in the 68th minute – also after preliminary work from the world champions Argentina. In extra time, Inter Miami initially took the lead through Josef Martínez (93′), but conceded the 3-3 in the 114th minute after a goal from Yuya Kubo and had to go to penalties.

Messi, who had scored ten goals in his first seven games for Miami and consequently confirmed his market value of €35m, became Miami’s first professional and scored again in Saturday’s 10-9 win over Nashville SC. Inter goalkeeper Drake Callender, on the other hand, parried Cincinnati’s last attempt and became the match winner again. The US Open Cup final will take place on September 27 against Houston Dynamo FC.
