News | the black phone

★★★★ A boy appears in a basement at the mercy of a serial killer. An offline phone connects the victim to the ghostly voices of other murdered boys who want to help him, and the boy’s sister has visions. This, folks, is a gritty, gritty, modern key version of Hansel and Gretel, made by the gifted -uneven, but gifted- Scott Derrickson, a filmmaker here who does what he wants and does it well. Parable about families and abuse, goes beyond what it seems.
