Newcastle United: Continued interest in Maddison – agreement with Kuol

Next try in winter

“That would only cover three-quarters of his left leg,” Leicester City coach Brendan Rodgers countered a €47.5m offer from Newcastle for attacking player James Maddison in the summer. Although the “Magpies” improved their offer again in August, the “Foxes” bit their teeth. Like the English “TimesNow reports United have yet to put their efforts on the 25-year-old on hold.

Rather, Eddie Howe & Co. speculate on an upcoming change in the winter transfer window. Newcastle are currently tenth in the Premier League table but have not had a win since Matchday 1. According to the newspaper, the meager goal tally of eight goals to date and the recent absences of players such as Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin due to thigh problems have strengthened the club’s intention to improve again in attack. The “Magpies” had invested around 136 million euros in new signings in the summer, of which 70 million went into the signing of center forward Alexander Isak (overview).

For Maddison, however, the supposedly better prospects of being called up to the national team are a pro-argument for Newcastle, where Gareth Southgate is focusing on two other players, Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier. So far, Maddison, whose contract with currently bottom Leicester expires in 2024, has had an international match for the “Three Lions” almost three years ago. Maddison moved from Norwich City to Leicester in 2018 for €25m. Since then he has scored 48 goals (33 assists) in 178 competitive games and last year had his best season to date with 20 points in 35 Premier League games.

Coach Rodgers had recently made no secret of thinking highly of his protégé: “He is currently making the best impression during my time here. There will be interest in a player with so much talent. It’s a pleasure to work with him. I like him a lot as a young man and see how he’s progressed from the moment I first came here to being a 25 year old father. I see his transformation in life and in football. He’s really important to us,” said the 49-year-old in the summer.

“Sky Sports”: Newcastle agree with Australian talent Garang Kuol
