Newcastle United bring in Leicester’s Barnes: More than 100 million invested

Newcastle United continue to upgrade for their first Champions League appearance since 2002/03. Left winger Harvey Barnes is moving from relegated Leicester City to St. James’ Park, as the “Magpies” confirmed on Sunday. The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract and, according to media reports from England, will cost around 44 million euros. This puts Barnes in fourth place among Newcastle’s record arrivals, level with ex-Hoffenheimer Joelinton (26). The Brazilian moved from TSG to north-east England in 2019/20.

Newcastle break the 100m mark in transfer spending this summer for only their third signing. Before that came Sandro Tonali (23) for 64m from AC Milan and Yankuba Minteh (19) for 8m from Odense BK. The latter was immediately loaned out to Dutch champions Feyenoord. So far in 2023/24, ten clubs have invested more than €100m in new players, with Newcastle currently in eighth place in the ranking led by Arsenal with €116m.

Barnes had also previously been linked with West Ham United and Aston Villa but Newcastle had long been considered favorites to sign. The one-time England international (debut October 2020) comes from the youth side of the Championship-relegated Foxes. Barnes scored 45 goals and 32 assists in 187 competitive games for his club, last season he was his team’s top scorer in the Premier League with 13 goals.
