Newcastle are looking to break their own transfer record for Leicester’s Maddison

More expensive than Joelinton

Newcastle United have so far spent 66 million euros on the transfer market for Sven Botman (22), Matt Targett (26) and Nick Pope (30) – two defenders and a goalkeeper. Coach Eddie Howe has also identified a need for improvement for the offensive. According to consistent reports from England, the object of desire is James Maddison (25) from Leicester City.

Such as “The Athletic“, “Sky Sports” and the “BBCreport, the Foxes have turned down an initial offer from the Magpies for the prolific midfielder of around €47.5m (£40m). Even with this sum, Maddison would have replaced ex-Hoffenheimer Joelinton (25) as the most expensive entry in Newcastle’s club history in a transfer. The Brazilian arrived for €44m in 2019/20.

Newcastle are said not to have been deterred by the rejection, but instead submitted a second offer to Leicester. According to the reports, this is between the initially offered 47.5 million and 59.7 million euros (50 million pounds). Leicester are said to be asking for 71.5 million euros (60 million pounds) for Maddison, who is still tied until 2024. The most expensive departure of the “Foxes” so far is Harry Maguire (29), who went to Manchester United in 2019 for 87 million.

Maddison moved from Norwich City to Leicester in 2018 for €25m. Since then he has scored 45 goals (32 assists) in 170 competitive games and last year had his best season to date with 20 points in 35 Premier League games. “He is currently making the best impression of my time here. There will be interest in a player with so much talent. It’s a pleasure to work with him. I like him a lot as a young man and see how he’s progressed from the moment I first came here to being a 25 year old father. I see his transformation in life and in football. He’s really important to us,” coach Brendan Rodgers said of his charge.
