I’ve been a police reporter for 35 years. Knows about the worries and fears of the police and fire brigade. About the mendacity of politics. She asks to go to the media theater when the child is already in the fountain. Only interest: save votes.

New Year’s Eve was like a civil war. Kind looks and dripping promises from Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Berlin’s Interior Senator Iris Spranger (both SPD), as on Friday at an affected fire station, cannot change that.

Not for the first time forces were attacked. The former police chief Dieter Glietsch (also SPD) had warned against violent young people with a migration background. Officials who are familiar with the scene are ignored.

Senate officials and the commissioner of police should ask themselves if they’re the right people for the job.
