New study: Women in music still severely underrepresented

The School of Journalism USC Annenberg of South Carolina released their report on the gender equity of the 2022 Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The study shows the development of the proportion of women since 2012.

In 2022, only 14 percent of songwriters would be women, and among producers only 3.4 percent of the 232 people. A person defines themselves as non-binary. Although the proportion of women, at 30 percent, is the highest in the past ten years, there has only been marginal change among songwriters and producers during this period. Last year, the proportion of women was 14.3 percent of songwriters and 3.9 percent of producers, with the highest proportion in 2019 at 5 percent. Out of 1,100 songs, less than 1 percent have female songwriters exclusively.

On February 6th, the annual Grammys will take place for the 65th time. According to the report, there is also a significant difference in the renowned music prize. Just under 14 percent of the nominees between 2013 and 2023 are women.

In Germany, too, the topic was often the subject of discussion. For example, with the proportion of women on festival stages, which, according to one Study by the MaLisa Foundation was below 20 percent. In the German charts, the proportion of women has even fallen from 13.2 percent in 2012 to 10.9 percent in 2015 and 8.3 percent in 2019.
