More space for art, more space for visitors and an elevator. These are the most important changes now that the Stedelijk Museum Meppel is moving from the Hoofdstraat to the Kromme Elleboog. The renovated museum will be officially opened tomorrow.
According to curator and temporary chairman Mieke Mulders, the museum has outgrown its capacity in recent years. “We have beautiful art from the region. Our museum on Hoofdstraat became much too small for that.”
In addition to a lack of space, accessibility also affected the museum in the old building. “It was a beautiful old house, we loved it very much. Just those stairs… We had to say goodbye to volunteers who could no longer climb the stairs. And especially our visitors could no longer come because they have difficulty walking.”
In the new building on Kromme Elleboog, the museum finally has an elevator. “Everyone can now participate,” says Mulders, visibly satisfied.
The museum is located in a former warehouse, where old elements have deliberately remained visible. Upon entering, the open spaces and wooden constructions are immediately noticeable. “Our architect said: you should have emptiness when you enter.”
