New single Hannah Mae in Dutch: ‘Too good to give to someone else’

Singer Hannah Mae from Emmen has released a new single: De Kerkstraat. After the success of Back to you, she makes the switch to Dutch with her new song.

“I had a writing session with three guys and they suggested writing in Dutch. They asked if I was open to it. I thought: I can always try it. That’s how De Kerkstraat was born.”

The song is about a relationship in which someone cheats. “It’s not autobiographical,” Mae says. “We came up with a scenario based on feeling and we started writing from there.”

The number is not about a specific Kerkstraat. “The Kerkstraat can be found throughout the Netherlands, we found out that there are more than 500.”

Hannah Mae was a bit unsure about the switch to Dutch. “You are hyper aware of your pronunciation and I hadn’t really done anything in Dutch yet. I listened to the song more and more and thought: this is too good to give to someone else.”

Singing in her native language now feels familiar. So familiar, in fact, that a new Dutch number is being worked on. “At the end of this month, another writing week is planned with the same guys. We have started another Dutch song. And I’m working towards an album, I don’t know if it will only be Dutch.”

In any case, Mae has support to continue. She is under contract with Ilse DeLange’s label and forwarded the new song. “She was immediately mega-enthusiastic.”
