Michael Olise and Luis Diaz put in a world-class performance in FC Bayern Munich’s win against VfL Wolfsburg. The wing tongs even outshine Harry Kane.
Vincent Kompany avoided using superlatives, but the extent to which his team enchanted even the Belgian was clear to see. “It’s 5:1, 6:1, 7:1 and yet they keep running, pressing and still trying to score goals,” the FC Bayern Munich coach enthused, almost in awe DAZNafter his team had dealt VfL Wolfsburg the worst defeat in the club’s history.
The German record champions had just dispatched their guests 8:1 (2:1) in the Allianz Arena. A tailor-made start to the competitive season of 2026, in which the third treble in the club’s history is not only possible for Kompany’s protégés, but must now seem plausible even to the biggest critic.
The Munich team have scored 93 goals in 26 games this season. Opponents are literally crushed with a regularity that is beautiful or unpleasant depending on your perspective. And how not? Stopping Harry Kane is a Herculean task. But since Michael Olise AND Luis Diaz also usually have to be tamed, the defensive work quickly becomes a suicide mission.
“Oliaz” shoots Wolfsburg apart
The new winger whirled against VfL with a frightening enthusiasm. Olise (two goals, one assist) and Diaz (one goal, two assists) both collected three official scorer points, each assisting one of the other’s goals.
Both were also crucially involved in Wolfsburg’s two own goals: When Kilian Fischer’s mishap (5′) after a cross from Diaz, Olise ran in and when Moritz Jenz hit his own goal (53′), Olise was actually looking for the sliding Diaz. The understanding between the French and the Colombian seems to work blindly.
Even Kane fades
But the pair’s impact goes far beyond goal participation. Olise was everywhere on the pitch against Lower Saxony, playing one opening pass after the next. Diaz worked against the ball, stabbed deep, offered himself. It felt like every touch of the ball by “Oliaz” caused danger in front of the box of the pitiful Wolves keeper Kamil Grabara.
Even exceptional striker Kane faded somewhat against Wolfsburg against the background of the congenial duo. This fact says more about the two wingers than about the Englishman, who himself showed a strong performance with an assist and an absolute dream goal.
Kompany shies away from the “robbery” comparison
But the day belonged to Olise and Diaz. Kompany shied away from the comparison to Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry at the press conference after the 8-1 win, but it shouldn’t be long before the analogy is justified in the eyes of the reserved coach.
Ultimately, despite the hefty fee of 53 million euros that FC Bayern paid to Crystal Palace for his services in the summer of 2024, Olise is increasingly becoming a bargain. The 24-year-old has an incredible 70 scorer points (32 hits, 38 assists) in 81 competitive games on the Isar. According to “transfermarkt.de”, the Frenchman’s market value is currently 130 million euros.
Neuer’s statement becomes a threat
With Diaz you can’t go that far given the even higher price tag of 70 million euros. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old is at least a candidate for the best transfer of the current season, if not the top favorite in this category. After all, his goal participation rate is even better than Olise’s. In 23 appearances for FCB he scored 14 times and added nine more goals. Overall, “Oliaz” have netted or assisted a brutal 50 times in the current season.
FC Bayern are not even at full strength yet, as captain Manuel Neuer recalled after the triumph against Wolfsburg. When asked about Olise, the 39-year-old analyzed DAZN: “I think he’s having a lot of fun with our team, especially when Jamal (Musiala, editor’s note) comes back… He’s also a player with whom he gets along very well.” A threat?
