The project not only offers insights into the past, but also lessons for the future. Knowledge about past sea levels and dikes helps scientists to better adapt our coastal defense to future challenges.
Mayor Jean-Marie Dedecker of Middelkerke, which was part of the former island, responds enthusiastically: “I learned that Testerep was not a peninsula. I always thought we were connected to the land, but that was not the case. We now have the newest sea wall here and like to brag: we are already protected against the thousand-year storm.”
