The e-commerce giant Ebay Inc. will in future offer its customers in Germany the option of having clothing, shoes and accessories as well as jewelry checked for authenticity before purchasing.

As of November, the service, which was previously available for luxury watches and handbags as well as high-priced sneakers, has been expanded to these categories, the company announced on Thursday. Offering authenticity testing for products from the “entire fashion segment” is “an important milestone for circular fashion and the credibility of the pre-loved market,” explained Ebay.

Kirsty Keoghan, GM European Fashion at Ebay, explained the move. “Trust is one of the biggest hurdles in pre-loved fashion,” she emphasized in a statement. “By expanding eBay Authentication to include clothing, accessories, shoes and jewelry, we are giving people the confidence to buy the styles they love – from basics to statement pieces – knowing that every piece has been verified by eBay authenticators.”

According to the company, customers can now optionally add authenticity checks when ordering clothing, shoes and accessories from over 30 different brands in the luxury, sports and outdoor sectors. The service therefore costs ten euros per item. The company explained that jewelry priced at more than 500 euros would be checked without any fees.
