Prague’s Charles University campus is currently bustling with scientific activity as researchers examine the presence of invasive mosquito species. Led by virologist Jiří Černý, this project aims to identify mosquito larvae in small bodies of water, such as rain barrels and watering cans, that frequently attract these pests.
### Research Focus: Invasive Mosquito Species
The focus of this research is primarily on mosquitoes from the Aedes genus. Černý explains, “We are looking for invasive mosquito species that thrive in stagnant water close to human habitation.” Identifying larvae’s genetic features, such as their siphon structures, allows experts like entomologist Martin Kulma from the State Health Institute to ascertain whether they belong to recognized invasive species.
### Current Findings: Risk Level
Encounters with non-native mosquitoes like the Asian tiger mosquito have recently become commonplace in the Czech Republic. In the past two years alone, the Asian bush mosquito has been documented in nearly all regions of the country. Although this species is known in laboratories to transmit tropical fever diseases, there has yet to be a confirmed case in natural environments. Kulma reassures the public by stating, “There is no reason for panic. The risk of transmission of pathogens causing various tropical diseases is currently very low.”

Climate change is a significant factor in the rising numbers of invasive mosquitoes. The Asian tiger mosquito, notorious for causing tropical fever outbreaks in southern Europe, has been stretching its territory upwards, reaching as far as Baden-Württemberg, Germany. According to Černý, studies conducted in Budapest indicate that it has already established itself there.

Preventing the spread of these invasive species revolves around eliminating standing water, which serves as their breeding ground. Černý emphasizes the importance of vigilance, stating that “the effective protection against these mosquitoes is to ensure no stagnant water is available in gardens or on balconies.”
