The free primary school Mikado in Oeselgem has built a new building complex for 230 children. “We are talking about a file worth more than 4 million euros. What has happened here is in fact half a miracle. We are a small community in Oeselgem and have been able to build such a school with renovation, new construction, adjustments. Every class has been adapted,” says Tonny Berteloot of the school board.

The classes can be divided according to the need for more space. There is also more light everywhere and the buildings are connected by a walkway. “It is the concept that we are all connected to each other, including the spaces that are there. They have much more space to work and the connection with each other makes it so special,” says director Els Desmet. The central square has become a climate playground.

The parent committee also contributed to the project. “We have invested. We have saved quite a bit in recent years. Thanks to our investment, we have now been able to install an outdoor kitchen for the children. There is also an outdoor music system to create an even nicer atmosphere during the afternoon,” says Cedric Veldeman of the parent committee.

But realizing such a construction project in a small community was only possible because the school is part of a larger whole: Poelberg-Ommeland with schools in Tielt, Dentergem, Markegem and Oeselgem. This means there is greater financial capacity.
