Darryl Jones: In The Blood is a new documentary about the Rolling Stones’ live bassist. The film, directed by Eric Hamburg, has been available to see on Amazon and AppleTV+ since October 7th. It also features his bandmates Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, as well as Charlie Watts.

Between racism and music

The trailer for the documentary already shows the balancing act between Jones’ musical activities and his private life. The fight for equality as a black person and growing up in Chicago are discussed as well as his musical career:

Jones’ collaborations with other musicians

Jones has also worked with Herbie Hancock, Sting, Peter Gabriel and Madonna. In 1993 he took over the role of Bill Wyman as bassist for the Rolling Stones, not as a studio musician, but on stage.

Keith Richards on Jones: “He’s one of the best bass players in the world. He played with Miles Davis for five years and that’s not even his greatest achievement, you know?”

Eric Hamburg on Darryl’s role as live bass player with the Stones: “Replacing a founding member of a band like the Stones is no easy task. Nonetheless, Darryl was able to do so. I don’t know if they could have continued for the next 30 years if Darryl Jones hadn’t played with them.” Hamburg says further about the documentation: “I hope the film will inspire young people to pick up an instrument.”
