Marcus Mathisen’s contract with 1. FC Magdeburg expires on June 30th. It is becoming clear that the Dane will leave the FCM, but it has not yet been decided where he will continue his career. The hot contender for a deal is reportedly Hertha BSC.
The 2,951 minutes that Marcus Mathisen was on the pitch for 1. FC Magdeburg in 2025/26 are only bettered by keeper Dominik Reimann and offensive player Baris Atik for the blue-whites. In the coming season, coach Petrik Sander will probably have to look for a new starter for central defense.
According to “kicker”, the FCM still hopes that Mathisen will sign a new contract, but the trade magazine also claims to have learned that Hertha BSC is showing interest in the former Danish U19 national player.
In addition to the Old Lady from Berlin, FC St. Pauli is also said to have put out feelers.
Hertha BSC probably has a need in the middle of the defense
The many question marks in the squad could prove to be a disadvantage for Hertha BSC. With John Brooks and Toni Leistner, two experienced central defenders will probably leave Berlin. The “kicker” also reports that another man, 22-year-old Linus Gechter (contract until 2027), is looking for a change in the middle of the defense.
So there is definitely a need, but according to the report, the capital city should place their priority on signing a left-back and a center forward.
However, after the star departures of Fabian Reese (moving to VfL Wolfsburg) and Kennet Eichhorn (moving to Bayer Leverkusen), the coffers are solidly filled. The duo generated around 17 million euros in revenue. Although Hertha has to achieve a transfer surplus of 15 million euros, there is already a little leeway.
