Netto Germany branches will soon be equipped with hundreds of charging stations for e-vehicles

You will soon be at the net electric car can charge

The new cooperation partner is not the well-known discounter chain with the advertising slogan “Then go to Netto!”, but the less common subsidiary of the Danish Salling Group, which according to RUHR24 is Denmark’s largest retail company. The chain’s logo consists of a black dog on a yellow background. After the first branch was opened in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1990, the supermarket chain has also spread to the federal states of Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Hamburg and now has a total of 342 branches in the Federal Republic .

Now the discounter chain would like to take a big step in the direction of electromobility and, in cooperation with Vattenfall, one of the largest energy suppliers in Germany, is planning to provide charging points for electric vehicles in the parking lots of their branches throughout the nation. According to EFAHRER.com, the company had already made a small start in 2016 in two branches and set up charging stations there, now the project is to be expanded over a large area. The plan involves so-called rapid charging stations, which are to be designed, built and operated by Vattenfall, while Netto provides the necessary customer parking spaces.

Around 470 charging stations with a total of 940 charging points are to be set up in over 270 branches, with two versions planned, namely a 180 kW and a 360 kW fast charger. Not only Netto customers should be happy about the possibility of being able to charge their own vehicle: the charging stations will also be available to all other drivers of electric vehicles during regular opening hours.

German supermarkets are expanding the network of charging stations

Netto Deutschland is by no means the first supermarket chain to have come up with a plan for a Germany-wide network of charging stations. According to EFAHRER.com, for example, you can charge your e-car at Aldi Sd in many branches between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. for a long time, but since June of this year it has no longer been free of charge. As Golem reports, Globus is planning to install hundreds of charging points for its German hypermarkets over the next three years, where drivers can charge their Stromer while they shop in the Globus department store or use the catering facilities. Since 2019, no new Kaufland or Lidl branch has been set up that is not equipped with at least one charging station, and sooner or later every single existing branch in Germany will be equipped with a charging station.

As for the plan by Netto and Vattenfall, the discount chain has a strong focus on sustainability, which is generally in line with the company’s policy. For this reason, the energy provided by the new charging stations should come from 100 percent renewable sources. However, the price for charging at net charging stations is not yet known.
