Netherlands: Edgar Davids becomes new assistant to Bonds coach Louis van Gaal

Was last without a club

Former world star Edgar Davids will support the Dutch national team as assistant coach with immediate effect. This was reported by the Dutch football association KNVB on Friday. Until the World Cup in Qatar, Davids will take over the role of Henk Fraser, who will become head coach at FC Utrecht next season and cannot do both jobs at the same time.

“Our paths have crossed on a regular basis in the past and I am confident that he will be excellent in the role. The players can benefit optimally from his experience as a national player in four international final tournaments,” said Bonds coach Louis van Gaal about Davids, whom he coached in 157 games during his career as a coach at Ajax Amsterdam between 1991 and 1996.

“I’m not only proud, but also very happy to be able to continue my coaching career with such a renowned coach as Louis van Gaal and to work with the absolute top of the Netherlands,” said Davids. The 74-time Dutch international has been without a job since the summer of last year after his tenure at lower-league SC Olhanense in Portugal ended after just six months. After the split, club president Luís Torres was annoyed that David’s commitment was “clearly catastrophic” from a sporting point of view.
