Netflix is surprisingly canceling 1899

Right at the beginning of the new year 2023, Netflix canceled the next popular series – after just one season! Great hopes rested on the German project.

After the Netflix series “Dark”, the streaming service extended its collaboration with the creators in a very timely manner. The German mystery series about time travel and a mysterious nuclear power plant was a great success for the provider. Accordingly, the hopes for the follow-up project by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the “1899” series, were high. Apparently the title didn’t live up to expectations. Netflix canceled the series after just one season. This not only makes the fans angry, but generally causes a lack of understanding.

1899 was canceled by Netflix after just one season

Netflix produces tons of new series and movies every year. Compared to the competition, the in-house productions make up a much larger part of the portfolio and are the flagship of the streaming service. From the outset, there is a lot of pressure on series like “Stranger Things”, “The Crown” or the new hit “Wednesday”, since significantly higher demands are placed on such prestigious projects. “1899” has now apparently failed to meet these expectations, although Netflix had pushed the production last year.

Thanks to the latest LED technology and high-quality production standards, “1899” is said to be the most expensive German series to date. Unfortunately it was of no use. Series creator Baran bo Odar also announced the end of the series on behalf of Jantje Friese via his own channels with an emotional statement.

It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that 1899 will not be continued. We would have loved to have ended this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season like we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t go as planned. So life is. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this wonderful adventure.

Fans are angry about the Netflix action

It comes as a bit of a surprise that Netflix is taking this step just six weeks after launch. The reason for this is probably the already mentioned enormous production costs, which are no longer in balance with the success of the series. The provider has recently come under more and more pressure, especially in the area of exclusive in-house productions. However, Netflix has not yet officially commented on the “1899” end.

Meanwhile, many are venting on social networks – a large majority of the dismissal with indignation and incomprehension. Thousands of reactions can be found under bo Odar’s post alone. Most of them rather compassionate and sad. Many feel the show didn’t deserve the cancellation. In fact, the series was very well received by both critics and audiences. There are already initial reactions from fans calling for the rescue of “1899”:

The fact that at least the plot is brought to an end in a special has already happened in the past with discontinued series such as “Sense8”. In the case of “1899”, however, this is rather unlikely – despite the big cliffhanger at the end of the first season. This is one of the reasons why TECHBOOK editor Adrian Mühlroth is not a fan of the cancellation:

TECHBOOK means

“It’s starting to annoy me how Netflix deals with promising series. 1899 was one of them, with interesting characters and a surprising plot twist. However, too many unanswered questions and sidelines remained unanswered, and the series ended with a huge cliffhanger. But after eight episodes it’s over and the potential is wasted. For me, 1899 was a waste of time. Like many other subscribers, I invest a lot of time watching interesting new shows only to have Netflix cancel them right away after the first season. It’s understandable that the company needs to watch its finances – but the cancel craze is slowly getting out of hand. How long will subscribers put up with numerous series being canceled just a few weeks after they started?.” Adrian Mühlroth, editor

That’s what 1899 is about

In the Netflix series “1899”, everything revolves around puzzles and secrets, as in the spiritual predecessor “Dark”. Against the background of the great wave of emigration to America at the end of the 19th century, the action takes place on a ship on which the most diverse passengers come together. Everyone has their own – sometimes hidden – reasons for the crossing. In the middle of the sea, however, the mysterious ship “Prometheus” suddenly appears – which has been considered lost for months.
