Netflix is canceling “Goosebumps at Midnight” early

Despite a good start and media attention, there will be no sequel to “Goosebumps at Midnight”. Netflix surprisingly canceled the series after the first season.

At the beginning of October 2022, a promising horror series started with “Goose bumps at midnight” on the streaming giant Netflix. Especially at the start there was hardly any getting past the production of horror mastermind Mike Flanagan. So far, the American has been an absolute guarantee of success for Netflix. And you can’t actually speak of a flop with “Goosebumps at Midnight”. Nevertheless, although there are still open questions, the series will not get a second season. Why is that?

No sequel to “Goosebumps at Midnight” on Netflix

The very first episode of the ten-episode series ended up in the Guinness Book of World Records. The reason for this was the enormously high density of so-called jump scares. These cinematically staged moments of shock are intended to frighten viewers with a loud noise or a sudden image cut. And the first episode of “Goosebumps at Midnight” delivered 21 such moments – a new world record.

Apparently it didn’t help the series, because Netflix ended after just one season. The streaming service does not want to produce a sequel. Not only Flanagan fans should be disappointed by this news. The series actually got off to a good start and was able to position itself directly in the top 10 of the streaming service. However, the title didn’t seem to stay there long enough. At Netflix, there is enormous pressure to succeed, which in the past has repeatedly led to supposedly successful series being ended prematurely.

Creators and fans disappointed with cancellation

So far, Netflix and Mike Flanagan have actually worked really well together. Successes like “Haunted House” and “Midnight Mass” prove that. One reason for the premature end of the series is certainly that the series stayed in the Netflix charts for “only” three weeks.

On the other hand, it could also be because Flanagan’s contract with the streaming service is expiring and he will instead be working with Netflix competitor Amazon in the future. In 2023, fans can expect another production by Flanagan on Netflix with “The Fall of House Usher”. The title is based on the well-known short story by Edgar Allen Poe.

Flanagan Answers Open Questions From Midnight Goosebumps

In fact, the premature end of the series also means that many questions are no longer answered – at least not cinematically. Creator Flanagan didn’t want to put up with that. In a post at tumblr the American goes into detail about the loose threads of the plot.

In the same post, he also expressed his disappointment with Netflix’s decision to end Goosebumps at Midnight after the first season. Among other things, he explains who would have died in season two. He had also planned to pick up the novel “Remember Me” by Christopher Pike.
