Nearly snuck border post Callicanes around

The works at the border post Callicanes have been going on for a while, but now the iconic buildings, which have been empty for more than 20 years and were completely dilapidated, are disappearing. The end of an era. Bern Paret, regional coordinator of West Flanders: “For many people this used to be a post where they literally crossed the border and where you had to stop to be checked. Customs was located here. At the end of the 1980s you had a completely new complex that housed the replaced former border posts in Abele in Steenvoorde.”

Greener and safer

The province of West Flanders owns the site. They have been working on a master plan with French partners for a few years now. Callicanes will become a bit greener, and to make traffic safer there will soon be an ovonde. “That is a long roundabout that should improve circulation across the border and along the border. At the same time, a lot of exceptional transport passes here. People now have to stand along the road, which creates dangerous situations. The province and the POM want to provide a new parking lot here. And of course also sanitary facilities for truck drivers.”

Callicanes must be a place where West Flanders and France work together within a few years. For language lessons, for example, or for starting companies that are active at the border.
