As expected, third division football club VfL Osnabrück announced on Monday afternoon that Tobias Schweinsteiger had signed on as the new head coach. Bastian Schweinsteiger’s brother is moving from 1. FC Nürnberg to Bremer Brücke.

“We are very pleased that we were able to convince Tobias Schweinsteiger to make a commitment to VfL and have hired an ambitious head coach who has a lot of experience from various positions in different clubs,” said Osnabrück’s sporting director Amir Shapourzadeh. He thanked the “club”, to which Schweinsteiger was originally bound as an assistant coach until the end of the season, for releasing the 40-year-old.

Shapourzadeh did not provide any information about the term of Schweinsteiger’s contract with the “Purple-Whites”. Born in Rosenheim, he follows Daniel Scherning at Lower Saxony, who had switched to Arminia Bielefeld.

Debut on Saturday in the Derby in Oldenburg

“I have never made a secret of wanting to work as head coach again as soon as possible. The discussions with the VfL managers were not only interpersonal, but also really good in terms of content. That’s how the decision matured in me to take on the challenge at VfL absolutely want to accept,” explained Schweinsteiger.

He will lead his first training session at his new place of work on Tuesday and in the derby at VfB Oldenburg on Saturday (2 p.m., live on NDR television and here at NDR.de) celebrate his competitive debut as Osnabrück coach.

Schweinsteiger tried and tested as a player in the third division

The third division is not new territory for Schweinsteiger. As a professional, he played 148 games for SpVgg Unterhaching and Jahn Regensburg in this division. In the jersey of Eintracht Braunschweig, the former midfielder also gained experience in the second division in the 2006/2007 season. His other stations included VfB Lübeck and FC Bayern Munich II, where he ended his career in 2015.

Before joining the “Club”, Tobias Schweinsteiger, who was born in Rosenheim, gained his first experience as an assistant coach at HSV. Now he is taking on his first role as head coach at Bremer Brücke.
