NDR-Sport: Eleventh game without a win in a row: Meppen sucks in the back – and in front too

Status: 11/04/2022 8:54 p.m

SV Meppen has not won in the eleventh game in a row in the third football league. Coach Stefan Krämer’s team lost 0:3 (0:2) to SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Friday evening.

But this time there would have been a lot more. The Emsländer recorded a clear increase in chances and they also had the better opportunities. The bottom line was the seventh defeat of the season in the 15th game in front of around 6,000 spectators. The 0-0 draw at 1. FC Saarbrücken on the previous day was nothing more than a short break in the series of defeats. Particularly bitter: It was the third home bankruptcy in a row.

And maybe the only thing left for the SVM in this phase is to somehow save itself during the winter break. Everyone in Emsland is hoping that Luka Tankulic can be back in the first game of the new year – on January 15 at Dynamo Dresden. Last season’s top scorer is making good progress in his rehabilitation after suffering a meniscus injury. However, one should not expect miracles from the playmaker, who is not yet in action for the season.

Meppen sleeps at two standards

Actually, the Meppener should have planned a lot against Wehen Wiesbaden. But by the time the two early goals were conceded, Kramer must have turned a few locks of hair. Brooklyn Ezeh’s free kick from the right hung in the air forever. But neither did Matthis Harsman come out of his goal, nor did anyone think of marking Wehen’s Ivan Prtajin – and the SVWW’s top scorer headed in to put the visitors ahead (5′).

Six minutes later there was a corner after a Harsman parade against Benedict Hollerbach. The ball landed in front of the penalty area at Johannes Wurtz. The captain’s finish was half shot, half cross – five yards from goal John Iredale was completely free and put the foot away – 2-0.

Meppen just doesn’t hit the goal

The Meppen team also had chances against the guest defence, which had not conceded a goal for the first time this season. Morgan Faßbender (14th), David Vogt (20th) and Marvin Pourié (22nd) approached. At the latest after a very nice combination, at the end of which Faßbender’s shot whizzed just wide of the goal, Meppen deserved a goal (24′). But the goal-scoring problem has been a recurring theme throughout the SVM season.

It was a mixture of inability and bad luck this time too – especially just before the break: First Vogt missed miserably at the end of a counterattack (39′), then Mirnes Pepic failed after a good individual performance with a nice flick on the crossbar (43′).

SVM loses momentum and the game

Little changed in the game after the break. Notable stats: After an hour, Meppen was leading 9-1 in corners. But as is well known, this one had led to the guest goal. Nevertheless, there was still reason for the SVM to be hopeful. It was thanks to Harsman that it stayed that way, who prevented the 0:3 (62nd).

Coach Krämer made a triple change in the 64th minute. But as a result, the home side was running out of time. Especially since the Hessians keep skilfully stopping the flow of the game – with smaller fouls and discussions. And Meppen was bothered by it – not much happened at the front.

And three minutes before the end, Wehen Wiesbaden made everything clear. After a corner, Prtajin prevailed again and headed his eighth goal of the season to the final score.
