NBA star Luka Doncic has extended his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Slovenian announced this on Saturday via X, without calling a term. “ESPN” reported a three-year deal, citing Doncics agents. The five-time Allstar will therefore earn a total of $ 165 million (around 142 million euros) over the next three years and will move closer to the NBA top earners around Steph Curry, the best paid professional from the coming season.
“This is just the beginning. I am looking forward to the future and to continue building something special with this team,” Doncic, who came to California after a blockbuster trade in February, is quoted in the message. It is an “significant moment for our franchise,” said Rob Pelinka, General Manager of the Lakers: “Luka is an absolute killer on the field and combines this with unique generosity and care for the community,” added Pelinka.
As part of the deal, Doncic announced that his foundation wanted to spend five million dollars, to help 77 young athletes aged 12 to 15 years and to support their careers.
Last season, Doncic scored 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists in 50 games last season, more than ever in his career. After his debut for the team on February 10, he led the Lakers on points, rebounds, assists, steals and 3-point throws per game.
The Dallas Mavericks had given the Slovenia to California for the ten -time Allstar Anthony Davis. Dallas’ General Manager Nico Harrison was heavily criticized after his superstar deal.
