There was already intense speculation last offseason about whether LeBron James would end his long and successful NBA career and hang up his shoes. It is not yet clear whether the superstar of the best basketball league in the world will stay for another season. The 41-year-old has already decided what he will do after his career ends.
“My wife is going to get a hell of a lot of time and attention from me after I retire,” LeBron James revealed in an interview with ESPN. After all, his wife has often missed out in recent years: “I simply had to sacrifice time with my wife because I wanted to become the best player to ever play this game.”
If the veteran from the Los Angeles Lakers hangs up his shoes at some point, then “my family deserves all my time and attention,” he added: “And then I come too. I deserve my time too. Because I’ve dedicated myself to this sport for so long that I’ll be damn happy when it’s all over to just run away and do something good for myself.”
NBA: LeBron James doesn’t want to work as a TV pundit
He has a lot of catching up to do, especially with his daughter. “I’m going to spend a lot of time with her because I wasn’t with her for the first 11 years of her life – or 12, when this shit is over, 13 -,” says LeBron. It is still unclear whether and where the exceptional talent will continue his career. It is conceivable that the man from Akron, Ohio, will extend his contract with the Lakers again, move to the Warriors or Cavaliers or even call it quits.
If LeBron decides one day that he wants to end his NBA career, then one activity is definitely out of the question: working on television as a TV expert. He made it clear that he had “no damn interest” in following in the footsteps of NBA legends like Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Tracy McGrady.
“D-Wade, T-Mac, Melo – all these guys are different. I don’t really look at any of them as a role model. My path will be my own path,” he announced: “I respect everything they do, that’s pretty cool, I love watching Melo on TV now. He knows the game. I love watching D-Wade do his thing. But, yeah, I don’t really see them that way.”
