The project lands in the buildings of the European institutions, the former footballer: “The extraction of fiscal and economic value outside the EU is at risk, the governance of the European federations is weakened in favor of a foreign multinational, threatening the sustainability of grassroots sport and marginalizing women’s sport”
The NBA Europe project arrives in the buildings of community institutions. This is brought to us by a parliamentary question by MEP Carolina Morace, according to which “a closed league in Europe with permanent franchises and external corporate control (…) risks undermining the European sporting model, based on solidarity, community participation, youth development and equality, as enshrined in Articles 6 and 165 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and the Parliament’s resolution on the European sporting model”.
the question
—
Three questions posed by the parliamentary question of the former Italian footballer and coach: “Does the Commission believe that NBA Europe could transform into a monopolistic structure incompatible with the EU’s objectives of competition and cohesion?”. Then: “How does the Commission intend to prevent the value generated by European sport from being stolen from non-EU entities, for fiscal, social and governance purposes?”. Finally: “Will the Commission assess whether NBA Europe is compatible with the EU’s commitments on equality, solidarity and the protection of cultural and sporting diversity in the Member States?”.
the observations
—
“This initiative – continues Morace – could lead to the extraction of fiscal and economic value outside the EU, threaten the sustainability of grassroots and youth systems, marginalize women’s sport by placing commercial profitability before equality objectives and weaken the governance role of European federations in favor of a foreign multinational in the entertainment sector”.
