Star at collegiate level with Texas Tech under Bobby Knight, only 14 games in the NBA, then a life as a globetrotter, from the Philippines to Lebanon, before dying in a robbery attempt at just 37 years old, eating a sandwich in front of his house
“He was a tough kid, he never cried. His first love was football, but when they pushed him towards basketball he said ‘Okay, if I have to play basketball I want to be the best’. He didn’t accept mediocrity.” Speaking is Regina Oliver, Andre Emmett’s mother. A name that perhaps doesn’t mean much to NBA fans, after all he only played 14 games with the pros, 8 with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2004-05, 6 with the New Jersey Nets in 2011-12. But at the collegiate level he made his mark with Texas Tech, under the guidance of guru Bobby Knight. Then, one evening in September, a robbery attempt gone wrong, a bullet that ends a life too soon.
