The frigate that helped protect the Mediterranean against Iranian air attacks is back in the Netherlands. The Zr.Ms. Evertsen moored in her home port of Den Helder on Wednesday morning, after a much longer period at sea than planned.
The Evertsen was actually scheduled to return from a series of exercises in northern waters at the beginning of April, with the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its associated ships. But the Charles de Gaulle was diverted into the Mediterranean after a drone attack on a military base in Cyprus and Iranian missiles aimed at Turkey. The French asked the Evertsen to join them, causing the crew of the air defense and command frigate to work overtime for weeks.
The Charles de Gaulle is now sailing in the direction of the Strait of Hormuz, and for the Evertses it was high time for the journey home. That is why the mission has not been extended.
