Jan Geijsel has meant a lot to nature in the area, which we now know as the country of Geijsel. It is located between Abcoude and Ouderkerk on the Amstel. “He was the first to put part of his country under water in the late 90s to make it more attractive for meadow birds. And that turned out to be a great success,” Natural NH reporter Stephan Roest recalls. Gedles, Wulpen, Kieviten, Oystercatchers and many other species of waders and water birds soon came to the area through the Plas-Dras Beheer.

Roest regularly came to the country of Geijsel, for example at the opening of the meadow bird season, and the farmer has a warm heart. “It was nice to watch and talk to him with him. It was really a sweet, nice man who knew what he wanted.”
