Nations League Final: Spain wins against Croatia

Italy takes 3rd place

Luka Modric and Croatia still have to wait for their first major title. The World Cup bronze medalist lost the Nations League final against Spain on penalties 4-5 in Rotterdam on Sunday evening and thus again missed the crowning of Modric’s impressive football career. After 90 minutes and extra time it was 0-0.

The 37-year-old Real Madrid star has so far left open whether he will play for the Croatian national team in the future. For the Spaniards, for whom Daniel Carvajal converted the decisive penalty, it was the first Nations League win. Two years ago they lost to France in the final.

The DFB-Elf failed to qualify for the final round on the third attempt. Instead, the team of national coach Hansi Flick is testing against Colombia in Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday.

Like two years ago, European champions Italy took third place in the Nations League. Coach Roberto Mancini’s team defeated hosts Netherlands 3-2 (2-0) in the match for third place in Enschede. The goals for the Italians, who had missed out on the final after a 1-2 draw with Spain, were scored by Champions League finalist Federico Dimarco from Inter Milan (6th minute), Davide Frattesi (20th) and Federico Chiesa (72nd). The Dutch, who were much more committed after the break, only managed to get back goals through Steven Bergwijn (68′) and Georginio Wijnaldum (89′). Oranje lost 4-2 to Croatia in the semifinals after extra time.
