Former soccer world champion Lukas Podolski only sees Julian Nagelsmann as a quick solution to the national coaching position.
“He’s the only one on the market,” said the 38-year-old on “Bild-TV” about the former Bayern coach and added: “He knows most of the guys, recently coached a top team – that’s the solution .”
Incumbent Hansi Flick is facing elimination after the 1:4 disgrace against Japan. “If there is no success or a significant increase in performance,” said Podolski about the next duel with runner-up world champion France on Tuesday (9 p.m. / ARD), “the heads at the DFB will crumble.”
Podolski is skeptical about the possible interim solutions for Rudi Völler and Matthias Sammer. Both have been out as coaches for “20 years. I don’t want to badmouth them, but they’ve been more like officials in the last few years. If they have the confidence and are passionate about it, they’re definitely an option.”
Jürgen Klopp remains the dream candidate for “Poldi”. “That would be a coach who would turn everything around, bring in new energy,” he said of the Liverpool FC team manager, who has stated several times that he wants to fulfill his contract until 2026.
