The new national coach Markus Gaugisch wants to lead the German handball players back to the top of the world. As a big step there, Gaugisch is aiming for qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with the DHB selection.

“I would like to strive for that with the national team. And that is of course a high goal, the German women’s national team has not been there for a long time,” said the Swabian on Tuesday at his presentation. The German handball players last took part in the summer games in 2008. “That’s an ambitious goal. But I believe that you can only take steps like this if you face up to such things and move forward.”

For Gaugisch, who turns 48 on Wednesday, the focus is initially on qualifying for the European Championships in November in North Macedonia, Slovenia and Montenegro. To do this, the German team must win their final European Championship qualifier on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) against outsiders Greece.
