National coach Alfred Gislason lost his father during the World Handball World Cup. After returning from Oslo, he travels to Iceland for the funeral service.

Alfred Gislason had to cope with a difficult loss during the Handball World Cup. The father of the national coach, Gisli Bragi Hjartarson, died on January 21 at the age of 85 – just a few hours before the main round game against Denmark (30:40). The Kieler Nachrichten reported on Thursday.

After returning from Oslo, Gislason will travel to his homeland in Iceland to take part in the funeral service together with his mother Adalheidur Alfredsdottir and his five siblings.

The German national team was eliminated on Wednesday in the World Cup quarter-finals after a 30:31 defeat after extra time against Portugal.
