Manchester City reached the Super Cup final for the first time as winners of the Champions League. It was already the eighth time for Sevilla. The Spaniards won the Europa League last season and brutally took the lead against Pep Guardiola’s team. Youssef En-Nesyri headed in the 25th minute at a time when City seemed closer to the opening goal than the Spaniards.
In the second half, En-Nesyri had several opportunities to put his team at 2-0, but that did not work. City, with Nathan Aké in the center of defence, scored a goal himself and came through Cole Palmer to 1-1. Palmer worked a nice assist from Rodri with his head behind Bono’s goal, who kept a good game. In the last minutes of regular time, Aké had the chance to become the match winner, but again Bono stood in the way.
After just over ninety minutes, penalties had to be used to determine a winner. Nine penalties in a row went in. Only Nemanja Gudelj failed to do so. The former player of Ajax, AZ and NAC, among others, hit the bar and thus ensured that City could celebrate and Sevilla misses the win for the sixth time in a row. After last season’s treble, the Super Cup is also a fact for the English team that had to miss the injured Kevin De Bruyne.
