On Tuesday it was announced who the world footballer is. The voices of all those involved then became public.
Vinícius Júnior is World Footballer of the Year. FIFA announced this on Tuesday. The Brazilian won ahead of Rodri and Jude Bellingham – also because the majority of the fans voted for him. The Spaniard Rodri won the prestigious Ballon d’Or from “France Football” magazine, while Vinícius Júnior came away empty-handed.
If national coach Julian Nagelsmann had had his way, that would have been the case this time too. Nagelsmann put national player Florian Wirtz from champions Bayer Leverkusen on the one, then Rodri and the now retired Toni Kroos followed.
It was a similar situation for DFB captain Joshua Kimmich. However, the FC Bayern midfielder put Rodri in the top spot, followed by Florian Wirtz and Toni Kroos. The new world footballer didn’t get a single vote from Germany.
All coaches and captains of the national teams as well as specialist journalists were also eligible to vote for the award presented by the world association Fifa. The majority of the captains were also on Vinícius’ side. The Real Madrid winger was in first place with David Alaba (Austria), Alphonso Davies (Canada), Luka Modrić (Croatia), Mohamed Salah (Egypt), Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands) and Martin Odegaard (Norway), among others.
Five points were awarded with the first vote, three with the second vote and one point with the third vote. Wirtz and Kroos also received full points several times. While Wirtz was very popular with his teammates Lukáš Hrádecký (Finland) and Granit
