Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev can take on any opponent on the ATP tour – except for Jannik Sinner, who always comes off the court as a winner against the Hamburg player. Toni Nadal has now revealed that Zverev thinks a win against the Italian is almost impossible.
Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner have faced each other on the court 14 times on the ATP tour in the last six years. From the German’s point of view, the balance sheet doesn’t look too bad: he won at least four matches.
The big but: The last nine duels all went to the Italian world number one. He even won the most recent final in Madrid in under 60 minutes. Zverev had no chance from the first to the last rally. The only time he was in a similarly bad mood was in the final in Paris last year, when Zverev was only able to win a single game in two sets.
Nadal sees “unusual” Zverev bankruptcy
In the “Radioestadio Noche” interview, Toni Nadal was surprised by the recent duel in Madrid and said aptly: “A final between the number three and the number one in the world that ends in under an hour is unusual.”
Looking ahead to the match, Rafael Nadal’s uncle and long-time coach also remembered a conversation he had with Zverev in the past. “I asked him back then who he preferred to play against: Sinner or Alcaraz? He said Alcaraz.” For Zverev, Nadal recalled the exchange, “Sinner is practically unbeatable.”
Zverev did not give this exact assessment verbatim after the final in Madrid, but the Hamburg native expressed a very similar opinion. “There is a big gap between Sinner and everyone else at the moment. It’s very simple. I’m not the only one who loses to him. I just lose to him more often because I make it to him every time,” Zverev said.
