In Zoetermeer you have seen them fly around for a while: collar parakeets. Where do those green birds come from and what do they do here?

The poisonous, noisy collar parakeets are actually from India and Central Africa. But they have been flying around in the Netherlands since the 1960s. Originally the birds escaped or released from their cages, and it turned out: the critters can survive here. In the meantime, there are real collar sake parakeets in several Dutch cities. Similarly in Zoetermeer.

Peanut

There are many collar parakeets in the Randstad in particular. The birds mainly occur in the big cities and villages because they are dependent on supplementary feeding in winter. Without ‘free’ food such as the well -known peanuts, the parakeets cannot survive. Apparently we hang on it in Zoetermeer, because the animals fly around in large numbers.
