Mystery solved: so many millionaires live in Zoetermeer

“If you had 10 million, what would you do?” For many Zoetermeer residents, this sentence is over the Samson and Gert song a dream. But there are fellow citizens with such large bank accounts who can answer this question. How many millionaire households do you think Zoetermeer has?

The data in this article comes from the CBS. They use the most recent figures, which date from January 1, 2021. It is therefore possible that the number of millionaire households in Zoetermeer has changed (slightly) by now.

On to the numbers! In 2021, 1.9 percent of Zoetermeer households had assets of one million euros or more. That is a slight increase compared to the previous year. At that time, 1.6 percent of households in our city were allowed to call themselves millionaires.

In our area we see an increase in the number of millionaires in several municipalities. In The Hague, the percentage of millionaires rose from 3.3 to 3.9 percent, in the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn from 3.5 to 3.9 percent and in Wassenaar from 19.3 to 20.1 percent.

On the first day of 2021, 4 percent of households in the Netherlands had assets of one million euros or more. That was 32,000 more than a year earlier. Statistics Netherlands also included property owned by households. The average wealth of these Dutch people was 1.6 million euros.

Most and least millionaires

Bloemendaal and Laren have the highest share of millionaires. In these municipalities, this concerns about three out of ten households. That is a big difference with the Limburg municipalities of Kerkrade, Brunssum, Landgraaf and Heerlen: less than 3 percent of households there have assets of a million or more.
