He played at the highest level in the Bundesliga for many years and was one of the top performers at Borussia Dortmund. But now Neven Subotić speaks openly about his finances – and explains why money is slowly running out.
Former Bundesliga player Neven Subotić spoke openly about his financial situation – and made an open admission: “In fact, my assets will soon be used up, yes,” explained the ex-Borussia Dortmund star in an interview with “Sport Bild”.
The reason: His special commitment to his “well:fair” foundation. “I donated around four million euros and work on a voluntary basis. I played professional football for 14 years, but my salary was gross,” the 37-year-old continued. “And I haven’t had so many outstanding years with a million-dollar salary. That was at BVB for a while. My money is finite. That’s why corporate partnerships are so important: They help me cover the foundation costs and thus the foundation.”
Subotić founded the foundation in 2012, while he was still playing at BVB. With his organization he wants to ensure better care for people in East Africa. “To date, among other things, we have given 439,255 people access to drinking water,” Subotić continued. This number is expected to rise to one million by 2030.

Annual sales have increased from around 76,000 euros in the year the company was founded to almost five million euros. “We are trusted and entrusted with more, there are corporate partnerships and an ambassador program. This allows us to achieve more and continue to keep our 100 percent promise,” he also explained, referring to a special assurance from his foundation: of every euro donated, the full 100 cents reach their goal.
Subotić ended his career in 2021 and was most recently under contract in Austria with SCR Altach. With Borussia Dortmund he became German champion in 2011 and 2012 and also won the DFB Cup in 2012 and 2017.
