Everything is different: Mustang is completely redesigning its jeans for summer 2023. Clear forms, Japanese influences and a deep blue characterize a natural look.
Whoever says jeans thinks blue at the same time. Mustang’s summer 2023 collection combines the classic denim color with a homage to old Japanese fabrics and motifs. The soft indigo blue, which characterizes an entire aesthetic in Japan, serves as an inspiration as well as traditional fabrics, patchwork and finely drawn prints. They give the collection a light and natural look.
Materials are simple and minimalist, with raw cotton and linen taking center stage. For women, that means: loose, non-slip jeans made of raw cotton, whose hems sometimes look like they’ve been unpicked. Patchwork-style denims or denims with sewn-on patches look as if they have already been repaired a few times. The look underlines the idea of preservation – and Mustang’s claim to design clothes that you will have forever.
Oversized swear shirts made of raw cotton jersey come with a hand-drawn crane print. Bright blue wide-leg jeans and 90’s boyfriend denims look clean and relaxed: a touch of summer breeze, a little lost in translation. Elsewhere, a short denim kimono serves as an alternative to the denim jacket. Details such as buttons made from real corozo bring natural elements into the collection.
This reference to nature is also reflected in the colours. They are muted and soft, sometimes almost washed out. Its sun-bleached look is reminiscent of analog film footage. The palette ranges from off-white, sand and beige to warm salmon tones. And again and again: Blue, “aoi” in Japanese. From the Hokusai wave to traditional workwear, it’s everywhere in Japan.
This world of images also characterizes the prints of the collection. Bamboo plants, cranes, kanji (Japanese characters) and colored all-over prints can be found on sweatshirts and t-shirts. All motifs are hand-drawn. Knotted belts in a macrame look and hoodies with a large logo on the chest complete the look.
It is this tension that makes Japan so extraordinary: The country is deeply rooted in ancient culture and at the same time hypermodern. Urbanity and nature go hand in hand. The thought is reflected in the designs. As the oldest denim producer in Europe, Mustang has a historical sense of materials and craftsmanship, but always looks to the future. It’s fitting that Mustang is completely relaunching its jeans. After a comprehensive market analysis, the design team has redeveloped all shapes: from narrow skinny and slim fits, through classic denims with straight legs to relaxed versions with a looser cut. The update aims to end the search for the perfect pair of jeans. That’s why all forms of women with the most diverse clothing sizes have been tested – so that everyone can find exactly their jeans at Mustang.
The NOS program will also be completely renewed with the 2023 summer collection. It contains basic fits made from high-quality materials that feel particularly soft, but still have the authentic denim look. These jeans are not based on trends, but are timeless and optimized in such a way that you want to wear them all the time – the jeans just for ever.
The idea underscores Mustang’s focus on durable products that increase sustainability. This also means that the brand uses less than ten percent synthetic fibers.
