Musselkanaal sloppy with opportunities to finish. ASVB takes a point

When Musselkanaal has to play after competition, the team will sometimes think back to the game against ASVB. The Kanaalsters missed a large number of opportunities, so that the Blijhamsters were able to make 1-1 in the final phase.

Musselkanaal coach Wessel Woortman was quite disappointed with the result afterwards. ,,It was a bad game, but when you get so many 100 percent chances, you have to decide the game early.”

With a win, Woortman’s team was almost assured of another season in the second division. ,,That’s not quite right, because Stadskanaal also won, of course. Only we could have taken a big step.”

With three games to go, Musselkanaal has a margin of four points on the notorious ninth place. Now occupied by Stadspark. Who if nothing changes, must play safely through the playoffs.

‘I especially hope that we don’t go straight out’

The position of ASVB is even more oppressive. The Blijhamsters are only two points ahead of a direct relegation place and the gap to the safe eighth place is already six points. ,,I especially hope that we don’t go straight out”, coach Jordin Louwes said after the late equalizer.

“At least we still have a chance to survive. Of course it wasn’t good today. You can’t expect that at the moment. But we fought for it. They don’t take their chances. Fortunately, we did that in the final phase.”

The first half could also have been settled in writing for a long time. Almost nothing happened. Only five minutes before the halftime signal did the game liven up. A shot by ASVB striker Brian Kuiper got Musselkanaal keeper Rick Knigge out of his goal with some difficulty.

The corner from the returning Erwin Aukes then hit the post, while Benjamin Spittje’s shot that followed went just wide. Yet it was not the home team that went to the dressing rooms with a lead, but Musselkanaal.

In the upper right corner

Demy te Velde struck mercilessly immediately after ASVB’s chances. The attacking midfielder perfectly controlled a long ball between two defenders and shot the ball into the top right corner.

After the break, ‘calm’ quickly returned. ASVB tried to become dangerous with the necessary substitutions without much success. Musselkanaal bet on the counter and it seemed only a matter of time before the guests with players like Te Velde, Rolf Kaijser and Jordy Oost would decide the game.

Bottom of the bar

But Kaijser and East missed hopelessly only for ASVB goalkeeper Richard Zuidema. Substitute Roy Mensen also failed to get a ball from two meters between the posts. Captain Tjeerd Sikkema also saw his free kick bounce back into the field via the underside of the crossbar.

ASVB could do little to counter that. The mostly youthful substitutes lacked the punch to make it difficult for the defense. The experienced Trevor Eiten eventually had to be involved to ensure a header for 1-1, so that the hope of class retention remained alive with the white mice.
