Muscle injury: German handball players without Michalczik for the home European Championships

As of: December 29, 2023 3:27 p.m

Bad news for the national handball team: Marian Michalczik is out of the home European Championships (January 10th to 28th). The TSV Hannover-Burgdorf playmaker suffered a muscle injury.

“The injury is more serious than we initially thought. His loss is very bitter. He was an important alternative in the inner block,” said national coach Alfred Gislason at a press conference on Friday in Frankfurt am Main, where the team was going for a three-day preparatory course after Christmas had come together.

According to TSV Hannover-Burgdorf, Michalczik is traveling back to Hanover on Friday. The further procedure will be discussed there in close communication with the medical department.

The “Recken” had initially announced that their backcourt player would “probably miss the upcoming European Championships in their own country”. The national coach became clearer: “Marian is out, he definitely won’t take part in the European Championships.” The Icelander is foregoing a subsequent nomination for the time being; he wants to make up for the loss internally.

Two tough tests against Portugal in Flensburg and Kiel

This means that the German national team is only entering the final preparation phase for the tournament with 18 (out of a possible 20) players. The next course continues on New Year’s Day in Brunsbüttel, Schleswig-Holstein. Then there are two tough tests against Portugal on the program: The first meeting with the Portuguese will take place on January 4th (4 p.m.) in Flensburg, the tournament dress rehearsal will then be on January 6th (6 p.m./both games live in the Sportschau im Erste ) in Kiel.

In the European Championship preliminary round, the German team will first face Switzerland on January 10th in Düsseldorf (8:45 p.m.). This is followed by games in Berlin against North Macedonia (January 14th, 8:30 p.m.) and record world champions France (January 16th, 8:30 p.m.). The first two teams reach the main round, which will take place in Cologne from January 18th.
