In our province, more and more paths are being replaced in which steel snails are incorporated, especially in places where children play. Also in Medemblik these steel slags are located in the gravel -to -bar Graustabile, which was used for the construction of paths around a recently built playground.
Steel snails are a residual product of the steel industry and can cause skin and airway irritations. In some cases, exposure can lead to bloody noses. There are also concerns about possible environmental damage.
According to the GGD, health risks can arise because Graustabile has a high pH value. Certainly with smaller children, the risks are greater because they play with the stones more often or put them in their mouths.
