Munich wrestles Berlin down in overtime

Defending champions Eisbären Berlin have suffered their second defeat in a row in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).

The Berliners lost in the top game of matchday 42 2:3 (1:2, 1:0, 0:0, 0:1) after extra time against CHL participants Red Bull Munich, but are still comfortably at the top of the table. After a long forced Corona break, Munich ended its negative series and jumped to fourth place in the table.

Giovanni Fiore (10′) gave the capitals the lead before Filip Varejcka (12′) and Benjamin Smith (13′) turned the game around within 72 seconds. Matthew White (30′) brought Berlin back into play, but Benjamin Street (61′) scored in overtime to win for the guests.

In the fight for a direct play-off ticket, the Straubing Tigers won a clear 5:1 (3:0, 1:0, 1:1) against the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven. In the relegation battle, the Augsburg Panthers beat newly promoted Bietigheim Steelers 3:1 (0:1, 2:0, 1:0), the Kölner Haie conceded 1:3 (1:1, 0:1, 0:1) at the Krefeld penguins already the seventh defeat in a row.
