Without world number one Carlos Alcaraz they seemed doomed and reduced to the role of an extra in the Davis Cup Final Eight, but never underestimate the heart of the Spaniards. David Ferrer’s red furies will challenge Italy in the final even without their champion, who had arrived in Bologna to take the Salad Bowl but the injury suffered in the Finals in Turin forced him to raise the white flag. And so without Alcaraz, Ferrer did what he has always done well: reason, think, form a group.
