MTB Marathon of WTC Ruinen canceled due to wet and boggy forest paths: ‘Seems wiser to us’

WTC Ruinen has canceled the Intechneau MTB Marathon Ruinen. The mountain bike tour would be held for the 23rd time on Sunday, March 3.

During the last route check, the route makers came to the conclusion that the tour cannot continue. Entire areas of forest and heathland are under water.

At various places on the mountain bike routes of Ruinen, Dwingeloo and Havelte, the water is sometimes 20 to 30 centimeters high. The adjustments that may be possible detract greatly from the route. “There will be too much asphalt, cinder paths and wide, heavy sand paths in the route and that is not the intention of this mountain bike tour,” says the WTC Ruinen.

Broken down

Especially the paths in Ruinen and Dwingeloo, where 500 participants will pass, will be ridden quite a bit. WTC Ruinen is happy with the use of the private grounds, which are opened one day a year. “We also greatly appreciate the cooperation of the Dwingelderveld National Park and Defense Havelte,” the cycling club said.

The landowners will not be happy with the damage that will be left behind if the tour were to be driven. The working groups that work every week to keep the mountain bike routes good and safe to ride on would also have too much repair work to do.

“We would like to organize a great event so that participants, volunteers and not to forget the land owners can look back on it with a satisfied feeling. In order to be able to organize another MTB tour in the coming years, we think it would be wiser not to let the tour go ahead this year.”

Next year the Intechneau MTB Marathon Ruinen will be on Sunday March 2.
