The Russian director and regime critic Kirill Serebrennikov staged “Cosi fan tutte” at the Komische Oper. With success.

Are women faithful? Mozart asked this question in his opera “Cosi fan tutte” in 1790. At the premiere on Saturday at the Komische Oper, the Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov demonstrated with flying colors how topical the topic is in the mobile phone age.

He lets the loyalty test play out in his ingenious stage design on two floors in the fitness studio, cool apartments or in the luxury boutique.

Here, the sisters Fiordiligi (Nadja Mchantaf) and Dorabella (Susan Zarrabi) choose a yellow and a blue one out of colorful dresses. Perhaps a sign of solidarity with Ukraine, because the director is himself a victim of Putin’s homophobic policies.

So the excuse given by the engaged couple Guglielmo (Hubert Zapior) and Ferrando (Caspar Singh) that they have to go to war becomes oppressively topical.

Only musically the evening remains average, dramatically but first class.
