A growing risk aversion and various bad news from the crypto world brought massive losses not only to cryptocurrencies but also to non-fungible tokens in 2022. Even the heavily hyped Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs were not spared from the setback. In addition to the other shocks on the crypto market, accusations of racism also weighed on here.

Selling a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT

However, the hope that things will get better in 2023 was fueled in mid-January by the sale of a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT for 94.21 ETH – the equivalent of around 133,292 euros at that time.

The value of these cartoon-style portraits of monkeys, each sporting a bored expression, is determined by attributes, among other things, with golden fur, a crown, or laser eyes being among the most coveted. The now sold Bored Ape NFT #4392 has the following characteristics: brown fur, unshaven mouth, eyes with 3D glasses and a background in New Punk Blue. The 3D glasses in particular are rather rare, so only 487 other Bored Apes have this feature.

Why is NFT selling so important?

As the hype surrounding the Metaverse grew, so did interest in rare blockchain-based avatars. In line with this, Yuga Labs released the Bored Ape NFT collection in 2021. This includes 10,000 illustrations of cartoon monkeys, whereby this number also represents the upper limit, because it shouldn’t be more. The unique cartoon monkey-style avatars were generated by an algorithm that ensures no two Bored Apes are the same. The Bored Apes are stored on the Ethereum blockchain.

The current deal deserves attention because the Bored Apes are among the most exclusive and expensive NFTs in the world and have cult status. Famous buyers – including pop star Justin Bieber – sometimes even put millions of dollars on the table for one of these NFTs at peak times. Many of them used their bored monkey as a profile picture on Twitter.

In addition to being a store of value, Bored Apes also serve as entry tickets to the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). Its exclusive benefits include access to limited NFT auctions and exclusive merchandise items. In addition, regular events for club members take place in the real world.
