After his player career, Coordes became a coach and initially worked at the OSC Bremerhaven before joining Bavaria as an assistant coach. He initially worked for two years under Udo Lattek (1984 to 1986), later under Jupp Heynckes (1988 to 1991) and also under Giovanni Trapattoni (1997 to 1998).

In addition, he was head coach of teams such as VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV, Hannover 96 and Austria Vienna. In the 2010s he worked at FC Bayern as a scout, athletic coach and analyst, also under PEP Guardiola. In 2021 he left the club.
